On Safety and ‘Safe Spaces’

Within the first few hours of a birth, a newborn’s nervous system has engaged millions of new sensations. Their skin, formulated and held in amniotic fluid, meets the air - an entirely new sensation. The air does not impede the speed of sound as fluid does, so sound is perceived as magnified by thousands of decibels. Light has no filter, so light is a brand new experience. Skin meeting skin...while you were floating inside of your mother, the sensation of your dry skin meeting someone else’s dry skin must be truly curious and surprising. The spaciousness of the body in the outside world after the intense pressure of later pregnancy and then labour is an unknown concept when you newly emerge from the inside world. In the first two years of life, as new sensations are introduced, a baby, and then toddler relies completely on the interaction of caregivers to respond to basic needs, including protecting their space, and in that protection, cushioning the impact of an overwhelmingly sensation filled world. If a caregiver is not able or aware of that protective need of the newborn, and a newborn is present to overwhelming impacts of sensory inundation, or is abused or neglected intentionally, the consequence is that the child grows up without a clear model of safely held space. Ironically, when care is given and then withheld or absent intermittently, this can result in greater levels of stress (adrenal) response than if a child adapts to overwhelm that is continuous.  The ’normal’ way of experiencing the world then includes that presence of Adrenalin, and children with this origin story will tend towards stressful environments to normalize themselves, such as abusive relationships, stressful workplaces, and/or substance dependencies. Some adults have an addictive need for drama or chaos, so the mundane world of taking care of self, children, work, community does not register enough excitement to engage emotionally. The system we will be exploring healing in this first part of Sparking Soul Prosperity is healing how you ”Spark”. We will cultivate a discipline of creating safe space to introduce a repatterning of the systems that affect our adrenal response, including kidneys, adrenals, hypothalamus, thyroid, vasovagal system, and mindset. I am excited to be in this medicine with all of you.
